Universal Periodic Review 10th Session
Intervention by Australia
Australia welcomes the delegation from the Republic of Nauru and appreciates its constructive engagement in the Universal Periodic Review process.
Australia would particularly like to acknowledge and congratulate Nauru, as a Small Island State, on the production of its national report, which required considerable effort, given limited resources.
We commend the Government of Nauru for its work in raising awareness on women’s issues domestically and note Nauru’s signature of, and intention to ratify CEDAW. We welcome the establishment of a National Action Plan on Women, the creation of a safe house for women and children who are victims of domestic violence, and the establishment of a Domestic Violence Unit in the Nauru Police Force.
We commend the Government of Nauru for its commitment in its National Report to decriminalise homosexuality.
We are, however, concerned that domestic violence and sexual harassment remain significant issues in Nauru.
We note the many challenges faced by Nauru in achieving its development goals. Australia is pleased to be working in partnership with Nauru on approaches to these challenges that are inclusive and that respect the right of every Nauru citizen to contribute to, and benefit from, the country’s development.
Australia recommends Nauru:
Prioritise domestic policies and resourcing aimed at eliminating violence against women and promoting non-discriminatory working relationships and respect for diversity in the workplace; and
Continue towards ratification and implement of the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.
Thank you Mr President
