Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review Working Group

Statement on Slovenia

by Angela Robinson

16 February 2010

Australia welcomes the delegation from Slovenia led by His Excellency the Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Zbogar and appreciates its engagement in the Universal Periodic Review process.

Australia welcomes the work undertaken by the Slovenian Government to resolve the issue of “erased” persons, but is concerned that the rights of 4000 people whose cases are still to be resolved, are respected. Australia understands that a legislative proposal has been put before the Slovenian Government which may assist with resolution of this issue.

Australia encourages Slovenia to accelerate the reform of its judicial process to address the increasing backlog of court cases in the judicial system.

Australia commends Slovenia’s work to improve conditions for its Roma minority, including opening special health care facilities and schools for Roma children.

Australia recommends Slovenia:

1. Enact appropriate legislation and speed up the process of recognising "the erased" citizens;

2. Implement the reforms already made by the Pahor Government to improve efficiencies in the Slovenian judicial system; and

3. Continue to improve the living conditions of the Roma population.
